Business takeovers are always a huge roll of the dice, but we suspect it will ultimately be successful between Lufthansa and Swiss. The latter was taken over in 2005, but Lufthansa press releases emphasize “partnership.” We shall see. Swiss has a longstanding reputation for courtesy and efficiency, and so far their reputation remains solid. All the expected luxury appointments and services are present. But for the techno-geek that lurks in all of us, a few too-cool features are too entertaining to ignore. For one, your video monitor can display flight data, such as air speed, distance flown and distance remaining. That technology has been around for years, maybe not on my own screen and at my command, but Swiss has upped the ante: two onboard cameras let you watch the world in front of the aircraft as well as below it.

Virgin Atlantic

Considering Sir Richard Branson is at the company's helm, you’re going to get your money’s worth and then some. It instantly drew the ire of rival British Airways upon its introduction in 1984; in fact, Virgin and BA exemplify old-guard vs. young-blood bickering. Virgin poses a strong argument for first-class -- ahem, Upper Class Suite -- travel, for which the carrier is quick to suggest it offers more spacious appointments than BA. Either way, you'll love the pampering, including the surprisingly roomy beds, which convert from your seat. If all you want is a good night’s rest, Virgin also accommodates this desire: Certain Upper Class overnight flights feature the “Snooze Zone,” with dimmed lights and minimal distractions.

Eos Airlines

Fare from New York to London: About $6,000 Among the amenities: 21 square feet of space per passenger is unheard of, but it’s a reality on Eos. Score one for the personal space lover. Plush perk: Arrive as late as 45 minutes before takeoff and the curbside escort will whisk you through security, and presumably, the paparazzi. Eos Airlines has room for 220 on its 757s, but it only allows 48 lucky souls aboard. Each passenger’s multifunctional seat is a joy to occupy across the Atlantic. This theory runs completely contrary to that of other airlines who stuff in passengers until the planes look like Tokyo subways with wings. But as we’re seeing in this feature, going against the grain has paid big dividends for carriers willing to take the risk. Eos only took to the skies in late 2005, but it seems to be making all the right moves. In fact, Eos guarantees it. The company recently announced a money-back guarantee of satisfaction, obviously willing to bet you’ll be among the vast majority of happy fliers who get outstanding room and service for an unbeatable price.

In 1971, the world was introduced to Southwest Airlines -- a fun, quirky airline with happy Employees delivering Positively Outrageous Service (and uniforms!), transporting Customers from ‘Point A’ to ‘Point B’ ontime, with a free bag of peanuts and a free soda to wash them down. Fast forward to today (delete the mental image of the hot pants from your mind), and the more you can appreciate that some things never change.

No question, 2008 was one of the most difficult years of the most difficult decade in aviation history. But true to our roots, we zigged when the other airlines zagged, posting an unprecedented 36th consecutive year of profitability. How in the world did we do it? With some of the very same ingredients that set us apart from the very beginning: low fares, legendary Customer Service, the best Employees in the Industry, and the courage and indomitable spirit that is unique to Southwest Airlines and dares us to be different.

Once again, Southwest Airlines received the fewest number of Customer complaints per passenger carried, according to the Department of Transportation (DOT). Once again, Southwest Airlines was tops in the ontime performance list for the mainland U.S. carriers. And once again, survey after survey ranked Southwest at or near the top in terms of Customer Service, including being named the 7th most admired Company in the world by FORTUNE magazine.

Korean Air Lines

Korean Air Lines Co., South Korea's largest carrier, led declines among Asian airlines after a record jump in crude oil prices boosted the cost of jet fuel. The carrier dropped 3,000 won, or 5.6 percent, to 51,000 won as of 11:06 a.m. in Seoul trading, the biggest decline in almost three months. Asiana Airlines Inc., South Korea's second-biggest airline, lost 4.7 percent to 5,680 won. Korean Air and other Asian carriers have raised fares, cut flights or fired workers in a bid to cope with jet-fuel prices that have doubled in a year. The cost of jet fuel, most Asian carriers' biggest expense, has surged in line with the price of crude oil, which jumped 8.4 percent to US$138.54 a barrel in New York on June 6. "Korean carriers are coming up with various measures to counter fuel cost, but that won't be enough to cover rising oil prices," said Yun Hee Do, a Korea Investment & Securities Co. analyst in Seoul. He rates Korean Air and Asiana as "buy". Korean Air last week said it will begin levying fuel surcharges on domestic routes from July. Asiana is asking employees to take voluntary unpaid leave. Both carriers are scaling back their international services. Other Asia-Pacific carriers also fell after the June 6 oil price jump, which was the largest ever, one-day rise in dollar terms and the biggest as a percentage since June 1996.

The airline is also struggling with the overdues to the state-owned oil markets,, airport authorities and operators. Jet’s outstanding to the oil firms is Rs 1,057 crore.

Vienna - The takeover of Austrian Airlines AG by Deutsche Lufthansa AG is expected to be concluded by the end of the year, the Austrian state holding OeIAG announced Thursday.

Since Air France-KLM and Russian carrier S7 did not submits offers conforming to the specifications of the bidding process, OeIAG said, it would now enter into exclusive "closing talks" with Lufthansa about selling its 42.75-per-cent stake.

"I expect the signing of contracts within a month, so that the necessary decisions can be taken at the next OeIAG governing board meeting on December 5," OeIAG Chief Executive Peter Michaelis said.

British Airways

Relying too heavily on past reputation, British Airways has slipped from its first place ranking in 2006 all the way down to 10th position. The founding member of the Oneworld travel alliance obviously needs to lift its game if it wants to regain the top spot.

Emirates

Consistently cited as one of the world's best airlines, Emirates is the largest Middle Eastern Airline. Based in Dubai, most of its flight attendants are recruited from overseas.

Emirates gives you a free hotel room when you have a layover between 8-24 hours but the thing you must do is ask for it while checking in. They will not let you book it at the terminal. I made this mistake and needed to go all the way back out through security, make the reservation, and then back through security again. The person making a reservation ahead of me was Tommy Hilfiger. No joke. The Emirates employees said he was a kind, friendly, mellow guy — important traits to hold onto when you’re as successful as he is.

I have flown internationally before (Mexico, Costa Rica, and Panama) but never experienced anything like the Emirates flight. The minute you walk onto the plane there’s this uplifting, ambient music playing with a woman’s vocals that roll up and down as if moving through a valley. It presented a good feeling given the fact that I was about to be sitting in 1 place for 12 hours. The crew reminded me of Jetblue’s crews; kind, friendly, funny, and down-to-earth, phenomenal.

China Airlines

A surprising addition to this list is state-owned China Airlines, which in fact moved up two places from 2006. With its base in Taiwan not China, because of political tensions, passengers to and from mainland China must fly through a third port.

Malaysia Airlines

Moving up three places from the previous year, Kuala Lumpur-based Malaysia Airlines also regained its crown for the world's Best Cabin Staff Award, snatched away by Thai Airways in 2006. Along with Cathy Pacific, it is one of only six airlines worldwide to hold Skytrax's five-star rating.

A relative newcomer, Doha-based Qatar Airways has drawn plenty of attention for its international service. While economy class passengers are treated to excellent in-flight service, with the airline taking out the Best First Class Airline tag, it's the first class passengers who, as usual, remain king.

Cathay Pacif

A former title winner, Cathay Pacific performed well overall ranking in the top four or five positions in almost every section of the survey. The flagship carrier of Hong Kong is also one of only six airlines worldwide to carry Skytrax's prestigious five-star rati

No stranger to awards, Singapore Airlines snatched the overall Airline of the Year title for the quality of both its economy and premium class services. From top-notch food to friendly flight attendants, any long-haul flight on this airline, which flies more passengers every year than the entire population of Singapore, is bound to be a pleasurable experience.
